Club Environmental Officers

Mountaineering Ireland encourages all member clubs to appoint a Club Environmental Officer, who can act as a champion within the club and provide a point of contact for Mountaineering Ireland’s Access and Conservation Officer.

Club Environmental Officers are not expected to be environmental experts, an interest in the area and being active in the club are the key attributes.

While it is up to each officer and their club to make their own of the role, Mountaineering Ireland offers the following suggestions for activities the Club Environmental Officer might engage in:

· Enthusing others about the environment, chatting with people about how we reduce our impact on the uplands, introducing the idea of Leave No Trace etc;

· Ensuring that conservation and environmental considerations are taken in to account in the planning of club events;

· Arranging an annual club litter-pick, a day with Mountain Meitheal or similar events;

· Arranging a guest speaker to give a talk on some aspect of the upland environment;

· Liaising with Mountaineering Ireland regarding any access or conservation issues that arise in the areas where the club’s activities take place.
